Moving checklist: before, during and after

Most moving stress comes from things being left until the last minute. Spread it out over stages instead, and moving day itself becomes the easy part.

2–4 weeks before

1

Get your quote and lock in a date

Book your removalist early, especially around the end of the month when demand is highest.

2

Declutter before you pack

Sell, donate or dispose of anything you're not taking. It's less to pack, less to carry, and often less to pay for.

3

Start with the rooms you use least

Spare rooms, garages and storage areas can be packed weeks out without disrupting daily life.

The week of the move

1

Pack your "Open Me First" box

Toiletries, chargers, a change of clothes and basic kitchen items for the first night.

2

Label every box by room

Colour-code by destination room so boxes go straight where they belong on arrival.

3

Confirm access at both addresses

Stairs, lifts, parking distance — let your removalist know so the day runs on time.

Moving day

1

Do a final walkthrough

Check every room, cupboard and drawer before the truck leaves.

2

Keep essentials and valuables with you

Documents, medication and anything irreplaceable should travel with you, not in the truck.

After the move

1

Unpack priority rooms first

Kitchen and bedroom first — the rest can wait.

2

Update your address

Bank, employer, subscriptions and mail redirection.

Nothing on this list is urgent on its own — the goal is spreading it out so nothing piles up at once.
