Label your boxes like this and save hours
Most of the stress on moving day doesn't happen during the move — it happens afterwards, digging through boxes looking for one thing. A simple labelling system fixes that before you've even packed the first box.
The system
Give every room a colour, and mark every box with two things: the colour of the room it's going to, and a number for how urgent it is to unpack.
Colour = destination room
Pick one colour per room (a strip of coloured tape works fine) — kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, living room. Mark it on the top and one side of every box so it's visible no matter how boxes are stacked.
Number = priority
Add a number 1–3: 1 means "open this first" (kettle, toiletries, phone chargers), 2 is "within the first couple of days," and 3 is "no rush."
One box, clearly marked "Open Me First"
Pack one box with the essentials for your first night — toiletries, chargers, a change of clothes, basic kitchen items — and keep it separate from the rest so it's the last thing loaded and the first thing off the truck.
With colours on the boxes and rooms, whoever's carrying boxes on the day — you, family, or your removalist — can put things straight into the right room without asking. That alone tends to cut unpacking time in half.
