How to pack your furniture without scratches

Furniture doesn't usually get damaged in a straight drop — it's the corners, edges and unprotected surfaces that catch on doorframes, other furniture, or the truck wall. Here's how to protect the pieces that are easiest to scratch or crack.

Sofas and upholstered furniture

Wrap in stretch wrap or a moving blanket, focusing on the arms and legs — the parts most likely to catch on doorways. Remove any loose cushions and pack them separately so the frame doesn't get squeezed out of shape.

Glass tables, mirrors and glass cabinet doors

Tape a large "X" across the glass with painter's tape — if it does crack, this keeps it from shattering into loose shards. Wrap in bubble wrap or a blanket, then stand it on its edge rather than laying it flat, and never stack anything on top.

Wooden furniture

Cover flat surfaces with moving blankets secured with stretch wrap (not tape directly on the wood — it can pull off the finish). Pay extra attention to corners and legs, which take the most impact when furniture is carried through doorways.

Appliances

Fridges and washing machines should be secured shut with tape or a strap and, where possible, moved upright, not on their side. If a fridge does need to be on its side briefly, stand it upright again and wait a few hours before switching it back on.

TVs and screens

Ideally moved in their original box. If you don't have it, wrap in a thick blanket, keep it upright (never flat, which puts pressure on the screen), and avoid stacking anything against it in the truck.
